Udemy Course Launch Pack (opinionated, free)
What
A step-by-step operating playbook that takes a finished set of course videos from "files on disk" to "submitted for Udemy review" with zero rework. It bakes in every hard-won choice from real launches: pricing tier, upload batching, landing-page order, caption policy, and the submission gate. An agent reading this should be able to run a launch without guessing.
When to use
- A video course is finished (all lectures rendered, final revisions filed) and needs to go live on Udemy.
- Auditing or resuming a stalled Udemy upload: run the gate checklist to find exactly which step is incomplete.
How
0. Pre-flight (before touching Udemy)
- Canonical final manifest. Every lecture has exactly one approved final
file. Filename pattern:
lesson-<section>-<lecture>-rev<N>.mp4. Never upload a file that is not the canonical final — a superseded revision uploaded by mistake means reprocessing and hours lost. - Multilingual editions are separate courses. Do not mix languages in one course. English and Spanish editions get separate drafts, separate titles, separate landing pages. Translate titles natively (e.g. "Trabajadores de Salud: Conozcan Sus Derechos en Redadas" — under the 60-character title limit), never machine-translate a title.
- Assets ready before upload: thumbnail (1280x720 PNG), 90-second promo video, subtitle (≤120 chars), full description, curriculum outline, resource PDF. Do not start the curriculum build missing any of these — the landing page cannot be finished without them.
1. Pricing (set it once, set it right)
- Set price at tier 17 = $89.99. This is the launch price for professional/skills courses. Do not start at a low tier "to get reviews" — Udemy's discount engine handles promotions; a low base price permanently caps revenue.
- Confirm the price saves, then re-verify it read-only before submission. Price drift between sessions is real; the gate catches it.
2. Upload waves (the only batching that works)
- Upload one file at a time, in waves of 1–3 files. Wait for each upload to fully finish before starting the next.
- Never start a second wave while the first is still processing. Udemy processes uploads server-side after receipt; overlapping waves cause lecture-to-file mismatches that are painful to untangle.
- Never re-upload a file that is already in the course. Duplicate uploads are the #1 cause of curriculum chaos. Check the curriculum page before every wave.
- Never download from a blocked/intermediate URL. Upload from the local final files only.
3. Curriculum order
- Sections and lectures in exact manifest order. Six sections / eleven lectures is a typical shape; whatever the course is, the order in Udemy must match the canonical curriculum document exactly.
- Title each lecture in Udemy exactly as the lesson is titled — no improvisation, no truncation.
4. Landing page (complete it fully)
- Title (native language, ≤60 chars).
- Subtitle (≤120 chars, states who it is for and what it delivers).
- Description (full, from the canonical description file — not a summary).
- Category and level (set explicitly; never leave on defaults).
- Intended learners + course messages (fill all fields).
- Thumbnail uploaded. 7. Promo video uploaded and played back — a promo that uploads but never plays is not done.
- Resource PDF attached to the course.
5. Captions
- Enable autogenerated captions in the course's own language (English captions for the English course, Spanish for the Spanish course).
- Spot-check captions on at least two lectures: one early, one middle. Watch 60 seconds with captions on; fix nothing by hand — but if captions are missing or in the wrong language, the course is not submittable.
6. Playback tests (the delivery gate)
- Play back lesson 1.1 and one middle lecture end to end in the Udemy preview: video plays, audio clean, no frozen frames, captions render.
- These two lectures are the canary. If they pass, the batch passes; if either fails, stop and fix before continuing.
7. Submission gate (all must be true)
- All sections and lectures in exact canonical order
- Every upload and every processing/HD outcome individually witnessed
- Thumbnail uploaded, promo uploaded and played back
- Subtitle and description verified against canonical files
- Category, level, intended learners, course messages complete
- Resource PDF attached
- Autogenerated captions enabled (course's own language) and spot-checked
- Playback tests passed (lesson 1.1 + one middle lecture)
- Price re-verified ($89.99 / tier 17)
- The exact on-screen "submitted for review" confirmation witnessed
Nothing is "done" until witnessed. A claim that outruns the evidence is the most expensive defect in a launch — it hides the missing step until review rejects the course.

- Canonical manifest pattern: one approved final per lecture, revisioned filenames, never reuse a filename for a reworked deliverable.
